Optional Enrichment Homework/Projects
Science
We are studying Landforms in Q4. . Your child may choose to research something they want to know more about. To earn a "4", he or she would need to create some sort of product to teach the class with, such as a Board Builder (Discovery Education), Powerpoint, diarama, model, chart, graph, poster, photo album. Tell your child -- "be creative!"
Reading
The readers' workshop is centered on students reading as much as possible and interacting with literature through the help of peers and close teacher contact. To keep students engaged with literature at home, I have a recommended book for each quarter with an accompanying work packet. This is a great opportunity for students to further their learning at home and increase comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. *The book for Quarter 1 is Because of Winn Dixie. If you are interested in having your child work on the accompanying packet/projects, please email me to prepare the materials. (give me one week to get materials copied and organized).
Writing
Students can be writing at home whenever they are motivated. It is a good idea to stress certain elements of the writing process such as: -- Main idea and supporting details -- Elaboration -- Style- Vocabulary -- Focus Feel free to have students write to some of the following prompts:
Interview a member of the family and write a mini-biography of the person. Pay attention to proper sequencing of events.
Research a topic of interest, such as soccer, and write a research paper, focusing on 1 main idea per paragraph (ex: World Cup -- when was it started? What countries play in it? What are some interesting facts or events that have happened in previous World Cups?)
Describe your favorite person and why you enjoy them so much.
A tree began to grow from your back yard and is covered with money. What would you do?
Research your favorite scientist and write a report about him or her. Create a poster, powerpoint newsletter or other product to share your information.
Math The best way to help your child at home with math is to practice multiplication, division, fractions and decimals in real world math applications, such as measuring ingredients while cooking. If you reference the "Websites” section of the class site there are many helpful websites that will aid students of all levels.
